A Little History

In 1983, the company was founded by Roe Hatlen and C. Dennis Scott, along with Dermot Rowland and Doron Jensen. The partners hit some rough waters early on, breaking up and creating their own restaurants, but eventually came back together; by 1996, their buffet brand restaurants were merged under one company, known as either Ovation Brands or Buffet, Inc. In 2006, the group bought the Ryan restaurant chain and added it with HomeTown Buffet and its similar names. But the road has been a long and hard one for these investors. Multiple bankruptcies (most recent in 2016), caused them to reorganize, and close down restaurants on more than one occasion. But, thus far, they have been able to survive, and keep customers.

HomeTown Buffet Menu

The menu for the HomeTown Buffet stores (mainly located in California, Oregon, Missouri, Ohio, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Maine) offers a variety of breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffet options. The breakfast options are traditional, such as eggs, waffles, cereal, fruits, toast, assorted pastries, and pancakes. Dinner and lunch options include fresh made macaroni and cheese, hand-breaded fried chicken, fried fish, baked chicken, and baked fish. Sides include mashed potatoes, rice, and gravy, fresh vegetables, french fries, cornbread dressing, two home-style soup favorites. They are different cakes and pies for desert. Their menu prides itself in having options for those in need of a special diet, such as diabetics, or those with high cholesterol. It’s all premade and ready to eat when you arrive. You simply choose your favorite dish from the buffet. Sometimes they have new selections, depending on location. Breakfast is not served all day, and you will need to check with the location nearest you for their hours. The food is meant to resemble home country cooking, but with the streamlined ease of a buffet line.

HomeTown Buffet Is Best Known For…

Their buffet! Everyone loves a good buffet. Just walking in, grabbing a plate, and eating as much as you can handle for one price is very attractive to people. But, many people may not know the hardships HomeTown Buffet and its sister brands have suffered. Mainly due to poor management from the corporate sphere, they have had to file for bankruptcy at least four times. Each time they have come out of it with only having to close a few dozen restaurants, and eventually regained their footing. The most recent bankruptcy was in 2016, and the effects and recovery are still underway. But, if they can get their top level management under control, the buffet style brand sales itself, especially if its got great food!
